About Atlas Ladder & Scaffolding Company, Inc.
ATLAS LADDER & SCAFFOLDING COMPANY, INC.,
The idea of ATLAS LADDER and its infancy began with an accident that occurred during my husband’s eight-year enlistment serving his country with the rank of staff sergeant in the National Guard. His experience as a platoon leader was incredibly fulfilling. He enjoyed the comradeship shared with his troops and the rapport maintained with his superiors. This made him realize that dealing with people in a business of his own is what he wanted in his future. The knowledge he garnered while in the National Guard regarding the construction industry has proven to be invaluable. One fateful day, however, while participating in a military drill, he lost his balance as he climbed a poll and fell 20 feet into a briar patch, of all things, adding insult to injury if he didn't possess such a great sense of humor. It was this tragic and painful, ‘though comical incident that influenced his life’s calling to create a better environment for those who build our world by researching and learning the ladder and scaffolding industry and making the strongest, safest, most efficient equipment and methods for construction available and affordable to the public.
Shelly was fortunate to have been hired by Newark Ladder Company, the most successful retailer of building equipment in the tri-state area at the time, as a branch manager in the Orange, and New Brunswick, New Jersey, branches for nine years before the company was sold to Scaffolding Of Great Britain, who closed several branches in 1966. Shelly and I were married November 6, 1966; one week later, my husband was unemployed. His efforts were not in vain, however, as the experience he gained on that job proved to be our lifeline, a blessing in disguise.
In January 1966, I decided to invest in my knowledgeable husband, traded my car in for a truck and use my meager savings. I learned the ladder and scaffolding business! With his experience and my gumption, I knew that we could make a success of our own. Determined, we rented a small store with a loft to hoist and store stock on Main Street in Orange New Jersey and with the grace of God, and a lot of loving togetherness, our business survived. Granted, this is not your typical woman-oriented enterprise; however, I saw opportunity and potential and knew we could make it work. Having grown up in a family-owned business, I was lucky to be exposed to the mechanics of running a business and acquired a knack for selling; obviously, regardless of commodity. Atlas Ladder Company became a labor of love! We worked long hours, lived frugally but resourcefully. In the beginning we worked side by side loading and unloading the truck while Shelly made the deliveries, I stayed in the store to sell and do paperwork. My secretarial school training was every bit an asset as Mom said it would be!
We literally shed blood, sweat, and tears as we grew with the company, making life-altering decisions, sacrifices, and trades to keep our business going. Time, perseverance, diligence, and kindness have been our greatest investments; a dedicated and efficient staff, through these many fortunate years, our most valuable asset.
In 1978, we moved to our present location 239 Watchung Avenue, West Orange, New Jersey. The business was growing, and we needed more office and warehousing space and a larger yard area to accommodate our growing customer base, our client’s vehicles, and a garage of our own to accommodate our own vehicles.
Eventually our three very capable sons, Mike, Marc, and Matt, and grandson, Corey, for whom we are so extremely proud, who have been working at Atlas during their teenage years, have permanently joined us in running the business. Their dedication, integrity, and work ethic that were instilled in them by their Dear father, the Patriarch of our family, has served as the hallmark of our company for many, many years.
Atlas Ladder Company is still going strong! Woman-owned and a minority employer, Atlas is a manufacturers’ representative for major ladder and scaffolding companies and a supplier to the State of New Jersey. We rent and sell ladders and scaffolding. We will be pleased to discuss with you, possible solutions for doing any job and we are equipped with a crew who will deliver and erect scaffolding on the job site and dismantle and remove it at completion of work. We are a small business concern with a mighty desire to please our customers. If given the opportunity, we are certain you will be pleased with the uncompromised quality equipment we offer at incredible savings and be amazed at our excellent service. We are grateful for your patronage, and it shows! Rest assured as Atlas eases your workload worries; we’ll put you “On Top Of The World!”
The Becker Family and everyone here at Atlas Ladder and Scaffolding Company look forward to meeting with you and serving all your Ladder and Scaffolding needs!
Sincerely,
